Royalties received were Italian royalties for their second Darkover anthology (I CENTRO REGNI DI DARKOVER) and the Italian versions of FREE AMAZONS OF DARKOVER and SWORD & SORCERESS 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14. The payments were mailed on September 1, 2007.

SWORD & SORCERESS 20 paid royalties in the US for this period. The other royalties received were French royalties for four of their six Darkover anthologies (LE CYCLE DE LEGENDS, LES AGES DU CHAOS, LES CENT ROYUMES, and L'ALLIANCE) and Italian royalties for their first Darkover anthology (L'ALBA DI DARKOVER) and the Italian version of SWORD & SORCERESS 9. The payments were mailed on December 9, 2006.

There were no royalties paid in the US for Spring 2006. The royalties received were Italian royalties for the Italian versions of TOWERS OF DARKOVER and SWORD & SORCERESS 12. The payments were mailed on August 21, 2006.

Nothing paid royalties in the US for this period. The only royalties received were Italian royalties for SWORD & SORCERESS 11. The payments were mailed on May 21, 2005.

Nothing paid royalties in the US for this period, but we got Italian royalties for SWORD & SORCERESS 9 and 10 and all four Italian Darkover anthologies as well as all six of the French Darkover anthologies. (The Italian and French Darkover anthologies do not correspond to any US Darkover anthology.) The payments were mailed on October 4, 2004.

The books that paid royalties for this period were FREE AMAZONS OF DARKOVER (Italian translation), and SWORD & SORCERESS 19 (DAW Books, USA). The payments were mailed the week of May 24, 2004.

The books that paid royalties for this period were SWORD & SORCERESS 7 and 9 (Italian translations), SWORD & SORCERESS 15 and 19 (DAW Books, USA), and the French Darkover anthologies, volumes 1 - 6. The checks were mailed on September 22, 2003.

The books that paid royalties for this period were SWORD & SORCERESS 15, SWORD & SORCERESS 18, and SWORD & SORCERESS 19. The checks were mailed on April 21, 2003.

When a book contract is signed, an amount of "advance" is specified. The advance is paid in installments (usually at signing, delivery, and publication). This is an advance against royalty earnings, and the book must earn back the amount of the advance through sales until the amount of the advance has been earned. At that point, all further sales generate royalties that are forwarded to the author.

This means that there is one payment up front for a sale to an anthology, then there are no more payments until the advance is earned out. If the book sells overseas, there will be an advance on that sale, and hopefully later royalties for it.

We pay royalties to MZB's authors twice a year, just after we get her royalty checks from DAW Books, which is the US publisher of most of the anthologies. We send statements only to people who are getting a check, so, especially if you recently sold us a story, you may not hear from us for a year or two. (For example, we pay the advance portion for stories in 2000, the book is published in 2003, and the royalties won't start until 2005.) This is why it is so important for the authors to tell us when they move.

For the years 2001 and 2002, the earlier anthologies have been paying royalties on the advance from a German publishing contract, which paid out in monthly installments for two years. The advance has now been paid and there won't be royalties again until the German sales earn back the advance on each title.

Most of the anthologies are out of print in the US, so we get very little in the way of domestic royalites. So if you are suddenly getting little or no money from us, this is why.
